Defined STEM's constructed responses are designed for students in grades 3-6 and have been created using templates from the future PARCC and Smarter Balanced Assessments. The constructed responses are developed to align with both the Common Core English Language Arts Standards and/or your local state ELA standards. Constructed responses are meant to promote high-quality student assignments that develop reading, writing, and thinking skills in the context of learning science, history, English, social studies, and other subjects. The constructed response is composed of two main parts:
Stimulus - Offers grade appropriate informational text for students.
Prompt - Gives the student a chance to apply knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities to real-world, standards-driven performance tasks.
Constructed-response questions are assessment items that ask students to apply knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities to real-world, standards-driven performance tasks. Sometimes called "open-response" items, constructed-response questions are so named because there is often more than one way to correctly answer the question, and they require students to "construct" or develop their own answers without the benefit of any suggestions or choices. Through the Defined STEM Constructed Response Task Editor a teacher can fully edit the constructed response stimulus and/or prompt to more closely align the content to their school. Associated real-world videos and news articles can also be added or removed at the teacher's discretion. In addition, editing enables teachers to differentiate instruction to different ability levels.
